The P90x nutrition guide is actually very good and it gives you a few different options to follow. If the nutrition plan is faulty, the exercise plan will not deliver the results you desire. You have to stick to the nutrition plan to gain the best results. The P90X Nutrition Guide is divided into three phases: the Fat Shredder; the Energy Booster; and the Endurance Maximizer.Eat nutritiously. The p90x program burns a lot of calories an in order to have the stamina and energy for this program you will need to eat a healthy balanced diet. Resist the temptations for “just one” helping of something you know you shouldn’t be eating. Refined flours and sugars will hinder your ability to complete the program, so read labels carefully.

Friends, we are going to enjoy the whole comfort, from the right moment we quit smoking. Getting on the top of the side effects of quitting smoking is easier than you think.

You can control the physical and emotional smoker in you. It’s said because people make something as a habit, due to various reasons associated with them. It might the problems at home or work place that makes a person to start with such habits. Sometimes it may be the disappointment from physical illness that makes you to stop. Once when you just analyze the reason thoroughly, you can find whether the reason you have found to carry on activities is valid or not.

The Quit smoking side effects can be good or bad. It all depends on how we take things. So, always try to be positive.

Global maternal and neonatal mortality rates are unacceptably high. More than 98% of these deaths occur in low-resource settings. Strategies to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths need to incorporate improving access to appropriate curative and preventive interventions, especially in home and community settings, where over half of the more than 60 million births per year occur.

RTI International has received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to create a framework that will enable the global community to approximate and compare the potential of a portfolio of maternal and neonatal technologies to save lives in low-resource settings. We are searching for new technologies now and would appreciate any referral by those who may be aware of new technologies being developed for maternal and neonatal health.

Thanks,

Camilia K on "Lecture by Randall Packard, a key malaria scholar"

On October 6th, Professor Randall Packard came to Swarthmore College to give a lecture on past attempts to eradicate malaria. Randall Packard is one of the key scholars in the history of health and disease, and an active player in current issues of international health. He is currently the Chair and William H. Welch Professor of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, and is the author of “The Making of a Tropical Disease, A Short History of Malaria.” Global Health Forum was introduced to Professor Packard through Professor Diego Armus, of the History Department at Swarthmore College.

The event was open to the entire campus, and was co-sponsored by the History Department. It was advertised mainly by fliers posted around campus. We estimate that around fifteen people attended the event, and while we had hoped for more, we recognize that extra-curricular academic events are often of a lower priority to students at an institution such as Swarthmore. In the future, we hope to more actively engage students through specific academic departments, and to plan more carefully around academic events such as midterms. Professor Packard was given an honorarium of $500 all of which he donated to MMI for the purchase of bed-nets!

Professor Packard’s lecture was entitled “Can We Eradicate Malaria? A Historical Perspective,” and focused on many common failures of the past eradication attempts made by the WHO. He addressed a number of issues relevant to the work of the Global Health Forum’s current project, the Minus Malaria Initiative, including the multitude of factors—such as culture, war, mobility, and basic infrastructure—that those instigating global health initiatives must take into account. He raised the question of whether eradication—as opposed to zero mortality—should be the goal of efforts against malaria by examining a common trend among past eradication attempts: an organization will cite eradication as it’s goal to attract attention and funding, but will be unable to reach that goal, thereby decreasing the probability that funding will be allotted towards malaria work in the future. This outstanding lecture provided the Global Health Forum with an opportunity to educate ourselves, and our community, and has helped to us refine our goals and methods in order to build a more effective initiative.

On Sunday, October 4, 2009, Swarthmore GHF launched ‘Give a Net, Get a Vote’ campaign with an event called "Give a Net, Get a Vote, Eat Many Pancakes". At this event a $5 donation ($5 = 1 bed net) would admit a person to a pancake buffet line of plain and chocolate chip pancakes. We also had letters for people to sign as they donated addressed to Senator Johnny Isakson (GA), Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FA), Senator Bob Casey (PA), and Representative Joe Sestak (PA) supporting three global health related initiatives up for consideration in Congress (http://www.globalhealthforum.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/letter_1_ghf_template_rep1.pdf). Some people donated $10, $15 or $20 and signed more letters (2, 3, and 4 respectively).

People at the entrance of the lounge collected donations, explained the content of the letters, and had people sign them. We had a slideshow of pictures from the MMI-GMin Bed Net Distribution in Sierra Leone 2009 running on a television in lounge where the event took place. The event was extremely successful. 110 letters were signed and over $600 (120+ nets) raised. Educational slides in the slide show would have been a great addition. Other educational posters and materials in the lounge would also have been a good way to educate people about malaria.

This event was a great bonding activity for members of GHF and an attractive way to raise awareness and raise funds as little money was invested into the event itself (pancake mix, butter, syrup, paper towels, etc..). One wrinkle to iron out is how to cook pancakes more efficiently. We had people cooking in front of the crowd on portable grills lined with aluminum foil and others cooking in kitchens throughout the building. This is something we definitely want to do again.

Baragatti’s study appears unique because it not only looks at the prevalence of malaria within an urban setting, but additionally the prevalence of exposure to malaria (if I’m understanding this correctly), the intensity of malaria infectious in positive children, and presence of antibodies. Very multi-dimensional.

I agree with the author/authors when they state that urban epidemiology in Africa is often overlooked by researchers who turn their eyes to rural populations. This article does a good job portraying how urban epidemiology is very complex and in it’s complexity, very interesting to look at. Studies like Baragatti’s should be used to encourage more studies in the urban sectors of Africa.

The wide range of bed net use provokes a question: why are some communities are using nets in 14% of the households while other are using them up to 35? (by the way, that’s no where near the supposed 80% coverage that is suggested to eradicate malaria). I’m curious what is the underlying reason behind this? Are the wealthier/ more educated communities purchasing nets? Or are there bed nets distributors closer in proximity? Or do some communities have access to bed nets but don’t believe they are in danger and thus, don’t use them? I’ll look into this further and get another post up when I have a better idea.
